As this summer still begs to supply more of the traditional “summer” blockbusters with explosions, aliens, apocalyptic themes, and superheroes, there are plenty of fun flicks to go around. Even if you aren’t with “Team Edward” a.k.a. a Twilight fan, you have to be under a rock to not know that teenagers are salivating over the 3rd installment “Eclipse.” Kristen Stewart’s character is stuck deciding between her love for a vampire or her friendship with a werewolf. Twilight sunk its’ teeth into the box office with a record midnight release of approx. $60 million.

Well for every winner, there must be someone who comes in 2nd place. Unfortunately the power to control the earth’s elements landed “The Last Airbender” behind Twilight. There were great special effects for this movie, but probably not as exciting as the cartoon itself. Director M. Night Shyamalan has had a hard time wooing audiences since his breakout hit “The Sixth Sense,” and “The Last Airbender,” besides special effects does little to give him more fans.

So, there have been a lot of family fun flicks blasting there way thru theaters like “Shrek Forever After,” “Toy Story 2,” and now “Despicable Me.” What’s interesting is that “Despicable Me” takes the unusual approach of making the villain the star of the movie. The main character (villain) voiced by Steve Carell attempts to be the number 1 villian who takes over the world, but always ends up coming in at number 2. The comedic twists and turns are enjoyable for the youth and adults alike.

Now things get interesting, as we will see how dramatic action movies will do against movies targeted more for kids and teenagers. Strategically opening midweek on July 14th, Disney hopes to make some magic happen with “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” starring Nicolas Cage from Disney’s successful franchise “National Treasure.” The story line, one we’ve seen before, follows a young boy who has been tapped by Nicolas Cage’s character to help save the world. This recalls another movie that came out earlier this year: something having to do with a boy named Percy Jackson who gets powers and fights Greek gods. I’m sure though that this movie will strike gold at the box office, that is, if Leonardo Dicaprio doesn’t steal Disney’s dreams of being number one.

Stealing dreams for a living is exactly what Leo’s character does in this monumental Imax 3D experience. This movie could well be the sleeper movie of the summer with the amazing special effects, all star cast, including Ellen Page from “Juno,” and visionary director Christopher Nolan from “Dark Night.” While not specifically a movie that may attract teens, any girls that are Leo fans or guys who like action drama’s that give you an excuse to beg your parents to take you to the IMAX, will want to line up for this one.

After this battle, in the coming weeks we will have “Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore,” “Salt,” with Angelina Jolie, “Step Up 3D,” “Charlie St. Cloud,” starring Zac Efron, and Steve Carrell again in “Dinner for Schmucks.” My votes for box office sluggers are “Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore,” because kids are out of school and who doesn’t like animals that talk. “Step Up 3D” will do relatively well but not number one, because a fun dance flick with amazing teenage dancers enjoyed by a 3D viewing experience; what teenager could pass that up? Girls like Zac Efron, but because of the gloomy nature of this one, it will come and go at the theater quickly. Steve Carrell is good for laughs, but not convinced that the kids will buy into this one. We’ll see though what fun the summer has left for its audience.

Watch the good and fun only!
